When and why was Fanimal created?

Fanimal launched in 2018 for the purpose of engaging the public in animal advocacy. Since that time, we have been creating our niche in the animal protection movement. We focus on creating a mentoring environment for individuals who want to explore animal-focused or environmental careers.

What are Fanimal’s mission and goals?

The mission of Fanimal is to provide a space for personal and professional development in a variety of animal and environmental related fields. We foster community, facilitate discovery, and accelerate career building for people who love animals. We aim to multiply our positive impact for animals by focusing on the development of animal allies, academics, advocates, and activists.

Does Fanimal have programs for children?

We offer multiple programs and resources that have been developed for children.

Junior Fanimal is a badge program that includes activities which teach children about animals and animal advocacy. This program also gives them hands-on experience in the animal welfare world. There is an on-demand version that can be accessed online, as well as a classroom version that is available for teachers and afterschool programs. More information about Junior Fanimal can be found here.

Animal Chat Time is an educational program held on Zoom for children and people of all ages. Our host, Nora Livingstone, highlights a different animal each week. Previous seasons of Animal Chat Time have been recorded and are available to watch online. There are beautiful coloring sheets available for each animal. We are currently working on an Art Program that will become available in the coming months. The Art Program will include animal-based art lessons for people of all ages and abilities, as well as live virtual lessons.

I’m a teacher. Can I incorporate Fanimal in my classroom?

Teachers are eligible for the classroom version of Junior Fanimal. Junior Fanimal is geared towards kids ages 8-12. There is a comprehensive teacher’s guide, and all Junior Fanimal activities are curated to fit into the curriculum. More information about Junior Fanimal can be found here.

Does Fanimal recognize animal related organizations and individuals already working in animal-focused careers?

Yes! Each April we hold Fanimal Rescue Month which recognizes wildlife sanctuaries, which includes all types of animal “rescue” organizations – terrestrial and aquatic wildlife sanctuaries, farmed animal refuges, and companion animal rescues. April 2022 will be our third annual celebration of these organizations.

We also will be launching Vet Appreciation Month in October 2022 in order for individuals to show their appreciation to local veterinarians.

What other resources are available on Fanimal’s website?

We have a large library of infographics covering a variety of topics including animals, ecosystems, and animal-welfare related topics. There are also blog posts and articles about specific animals, ecosystems, climate change, animals and tourism. We also have career interview videos available to learn more about specific animal-related job paths.

What is Fanimal’s DEI statement?

We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are critical to the animal advocacy movement and commit ourselves to building a Team, Board and Advisory Council that encompasses the rich diversity of our world. We aspire for everyone involved to be seen, heard, and empowered to do the work at hand. We help each other grow our awareness, recognize our biases and opportunities for growth, and dedicate ourselves to accountability to and with each other. Further, through our programing and resources we aim to interrupt human inequity in the animal advocacy sphere.

Our focus is on acquiring equity-grounded knowledge, having ethical partnerships and serving all of our constituents. We do so by doing the following:

  • Equity-Grounded Knowledge: We are committed to actively seeking and elevating marginalized voices and varied forms of knowledge within the animal-rights field where we utilize and share our resources.
  • Ethical Partnerships: We are committed to partnering with a wide variety of organizations and individuals with whom we can achieve our mutual goal by being transparent, impartial and realistic.
  • Serving Our Constituents: We are committed to serving our diverse global audience of individuals who strive to reduce animal suffering. We believe that everyone should feel empowered to be a part of the journey towards building a more equitable future for animals and people alike.
